Airplanes Review Continued ..
The
story begins with the strange friendship between David and Richard,
Rachel's husband. Although David and Rachel are cold towards one
another at the beginning of the story, a strange relationship
develops between them as a result of Richard's insistence that
David teach Rachel how to fly. Richard insists that David is the
only instructor he can trust with Rachel's safety and he repeats,
multiple times during the story, that she needs to stay busy and
happy, an obvious credit to the failing relations between Richard
and Rachel.
As a backdrop
to the tail, "Augusta Airlines", the fictitious name
for an apparently real airline from David's past, grows as an
airline empire and Richard begins climbing the corporate ladder.
In a scene in the middle of the book, we see Richard at a press
conference announcing his ascension to Chief Executive Officer
of Augusta Airlines. In that same scene, David asks to take
a leave of absence from Augusta in order to work as a private
pilot for a few years. This seemingly innocent scene actually
sets the stage for Rachel to become even more attached to David
through her flight lessons due to his separation from an entity
to which her husband is so attached.
Lessons
continue for Rachel as Richard becomes even more encapsulated
by Augusta. Meanwhile David finds a new love and marriage to
a woman named Sandra and Rachel is obviously envious of this
emotional attachment. Things between David and Sandra don't
stay happy for long, however, and soon David and Rachel find
comfort in their discussions of mutual suffering.
True story
aside, Paper Airplanes is full of wonderful metaphors using
planes as a means for both physical and emotional escape for
both David and Rachel. Their respective children play surprisingly
important roles over the course of this ten-year affair and
end up ultimately giving David and Rachel much more character
depth than originally anticipated.
Paper Airplanes
is a quick, easy, yet engaging read with an emotionally appropriate
ending. According to the introduction, this book was written
to give David some closure on what had happened over the course
of those ten years and he chose a talented author to paint a
beautiful and emotional picture of this real story.
It's unclear
how much of it actually happened or with which company this
all took place. The biographies list David as a current pilot
with American Airlines, but it also states that he's been working
as a pilot for twenty years. Since there is very little information
available about David and his career, it leaves the reader wondering
when and where this all took place. As a novel, though, it is
full of engaging characters and emotional story lines that appeal
to any reader, whether or not its real.
