Be Thankful!
Gratitude
can go a long way, especially if the guy planned the date. He
undoubtedly put a lot of effort into planning the perfect evening
and it's up to you to acknowledge his work. Not only does this
reward his ego, it earns you major points for noticing! Whether
you mention the food at the restaurant, the scenery, or the
entire evening, make sure he hears your enthusiasm.
Thank him
for the little things, too. Whether he's opening the door or
paying for dinner, saying "thank you" lets him know
how much you appreciate his generosity and chivalry. You can
never go wrong with a little "thanks".
This also
includes the most important dialog of the evening: telling him
what a good time you had! Not only are you reinforcing his efforts,
you're also telling him he's a pretty fun date. If you let him
know how much you've enjoyed his company, you're more likely
to get it again!
Look for those awkward moments
Every date
has the awkward silences and blank stares. Embrace them! Those
small pauses in conversation helps let him know you're thinking
and making an effort to impress him. Nervous giggles can even
help break the ice.
If you confess
that you're a little nervous, it will most likely help you both
relax. Acknowledging your anxiety to your date will help him
feel more at ease because, let's be honest, he's probably nervous,
too.
If you think
your date is feeling especially anxious and having a hard time
talking, consider asking a lot of open-ended questions to help
him feel more at ease. Getting him to talk about his hobbies
and interests not only helps him relax, it also helps you get
to know him better, too.
It's a Date, not an Interview
Ease off
on the interrogation. While some dates may seem as stressful
as job interviews, the whole point is to have fun and find a
connection. So keep the fact-finding questions to a minimum.
Sure, you're both curious to find out where each other grew
up and what you do at your respective jobs, but you also need
to find connection in conversation. Talking about the past doesn't
connect you to him in the future. Focus on fun conversation
about his thoughts, his dreams, and his current interests.
Tune in to HIM
Turn off
your cell phone! If you know you might get an emergency call
from work or home, warn your date in advance that you might
get a call. That way, when your phone rings, you can politely
excuse yourself and apologize for the interruption. Otherwise,
if there's no pressing need to keep it on, turn it off and tune
in to your date, instead.
